My Diary

This is a diary which chronicles my day to day thoughts and ideas, mostly connected with my Addison's, but also news about the website and anything which might be of interest (but probably won't be). Some people might call it a "blog" (i.e. a weblog) . On this page you can see the latest entries. To see more go to the Forum.

New rules for forum July 24 2006, at 4.00 pm

I have reluctantly decided that I have to make it compulsory to register before you can post a message or reply to a post.

This is because of the increase of "spammers" who attempt to leave links to fraudulent or obscene websites. Eventually the law will catch up with these sad people who deliberately spoil a resource set up to help those with a medical need.

In practice, the need to register should be an advantage as it will be easier to find posts made by a particular member. To help me weed out spurious "members", it would be helpful if you could give a brief summary of your interest in Addisons when you register under the "interests" heading.

Day Curve Results April 30 2005, at 11.45 am

I have finally got the results of my day curve. Rather than present them as a list of figures, I thought it would be interesting to plot them as an actual curve. This is something I have never done -in fact I have never even looked at the figures! You can see the results here http://www.quodvide.com/view_graph_data.php
I have included the ability for anyone to add their own day curve results. It would be interesting to compare curves and see whether they vary much from person to person and whether there is a male/female difference etc.
I would be grateful for any comments and suggestions.

I feel the results of my latest test really confirm the value of having a day curve test. If a single test was done, it might look higher or lower than the norm, depending on the actual time it was taken. The actual day curve in fact shows that a reasonable level is reached, but at a later time than expected. The reason for the slow absorption is not yet known -it could possibly be a low thyroxine level or, perhaps, just a 'freak' result.
I hope to add results from earlier tests in due course. This could be interesting as I was once on a much higher dose

Hospital database (UK) April 15 2005, at 3.05 pm

I have set up a database of UK hospitals on an experimental basis. If you have experience of treatment for Addisons at a UK hospital, please enter the details. The aim is to build up a resource so people can compare treatment at different hospitals.

Go to the hospital information page - http://www.quodvide.com/hospital.php

Tiredness, Helen Reddy and other matters! April 6 2005, at 9.50 pm

OK, these are a few unrelated random thoughts.

After my burst of energy digging the garden on Sunday, I subsequently felt absolutely exhausted on Monday morning. Maybe I should have taken an extra 5 or 10 mg before I started -perhaps I should ask the Prof. if I can increase my daily dose slightly. He reduced it last year from what was an unusually high dose. However, I had some unexplained hip pains which he surmised could have been caused by Avascular necrosis - a condition normally only found in people who have been on very high doses of cortisone.

Every Addisonian probably knows about JFK and Jane Austen, but I only found out today by chance about Helen Reddy, the Australian singer....

I found a pic of myself shortly before I was diagnosed - I have put it on my personal pages...... http://www.will.reid.dial.pipex.com/mystory.htm

I am experimenting with a database of hospital information .. I will trial it shortly.

One of the best forms of stress therapy April 3 2005, at 7.04 pm

....must surely be digging the garden! It is almost a spiritual experience to be alone with the sounds of the blackbirds, crows, pigeons and woodpeckers. Eschewing mechanical aids for a change, it is a delight to see each spadeful unearth a multitude of worms - at one with nature! A month ago I could not have contemplated this -snow on the ground and no energy.
Hopefully the summer will see this bare earth transformed into a mass of vegetables. First though we will have to fend off the pigeons, rabbits, badgers ,slugs......

Server problems March 31 2005, at 9.22 pm

The server at Pipex, where this website is hosted went offline for an hour or two tonight. Apologies to anyone who tried to access the site. Hopefully everything is sorted now.

A belated Happy Easter March 29 2005, at 12.31 pm

I would like to wish everyone a belated Happy Easter!
I have added some new pages - My day curve diary http://www.will.reid.dial.pipex.com/daycurvediary.htm
and a short presentation about Addison's - http://www.will.reid.dial.pipex.com/addisons_slides.htm

Better weather, better health March 23 2005, at 2.01 pm

Spring is here! The weather has turned a lot warmer, the sun is shining and I am feeling better than I've felt for several weeks.
One thing about being ill is that, when you are better, you really appreciate everything around you. In my case it is the beauty of the spring flowers. I have taken some photos here http://www.will.reid.dial.pipex.com/garden/

As Easter appproaches, it is easier to feel a renewed sense of hope.
Tomorrow, I am going to London for a "day curve" blood test. I hope to make a diary which will form the basis of the "day curve" page on the website.

New Look Addison Files! March 22 2005, at 8.20 pm

The new look site is on-line! There are still some pages to finish, but I'm pleased to have got this far!

More updates! March 17 2005, at 10.45 pm

I have decided to give the website a completely fresh look. I was wondering what image I could use as a new page header. I think I have found the solution - it is central to every Addisonian's life. A few minutes with the digital camera and I have it! Keep watching!

Addison Files updated March 15 2005, at 4.55 pm

I have spent some time updating the Addison Files. I have had time on my hands, recovering from my first Addisonian crisis. THe main addition is the forum, which I hope may be of use to someone. As far as I know it is the only forum of this type based in the UK. I am also experimenting with the possibilities of exporting and importing RSS feeds.

News forum March 15 2005, at 9.40 am

This is not actually a forum in that you cannot reply! It is where I can post news and announcements. These will also be visible on the Addison Files News page and soon as an RSS feed.
